Agricultural Stewardship

The LEPS Agricultural Stewardship program aims to work with local farmers and landowners to ensure that the integrity of agricultural practices are maintained while minimizing the impact of agriculture on Langley's streams and wetlands as well as fish and wildlife.

LEPS started its wildly successful Horse Manure Composting program in 2006 as part of its Agricultural Stewardship Program. The program provides education and technical assistance to horse property owners (not limited to Langley) looking to improve their manure management practices. The education component of the program includes workshops on manure management and composting systems. LEPS is available to hold two hour workshops for any groups interested in hosting a workshop.

For more information on the Horse Manure Composting program please see our Manure Composting brochure or visit www.manuremaiden.com. Farm to School Program

The Farm to School Program aims to connect farms with school cafeterias and classrooms to support local food production, create a connection with the farmer, help reduce our carbon footprint and promote long term healthy eating habits by increasing student access to local fruit and vegetables.

The vision for this specific project, first of its kind in the Fraser Valley, is to have local, fresh produce served at the Aldergrove Community Secondary School cafeteria. We have the full support of the Aldergrove Community Secondary school’s principal and cafeteria staff, Fraser Health and Langley Environmental Partners Society (LEPS).

The Aldergrove Community Secondary cafeteria has decided to start introducing local, fresh produce with a "create your own" sandwich bar first and then integrate local produce into daily or weekly specials. We hope to start this program in September 2011- just in time for the new school year.

Participating farms have the opportunity for long term outreach and advertising in the community. Recognition of the farm will be made through the school’s webpage and monthly newsletters; Parent Association Committee (PAC) meetings; cafeteria posters and more.

The Farm to School program was established in the States over 20 years ago and continues to multiply across the continent. For more information about the program provincially, please visit the Farm to School website.

If you are interested in participating in this program in any capacity or for further information contact Stephanie Captein, Agriculture Programs Coordinator, at 604-532-3515 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it . Sustainable Food Festival: Langley Eats Local

2011 marked the 3rd Annual Sustainable Food Festival:Langley Eats Local hosted by Langley Environmental Partners Society (LEPS). This year's event was held at Driediger Farms Market. The goal of the festival is to promote local farmers, processors and vendors that are working hard to produce food in a sustainable way and to encourage citizens of the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley to shop in our region.

We had over 1,200 visitors throughout the day who were able to connect with local farms and vendors while learning about the diversity of local produce, meats, wines and mead available in our region. Read more about it in Langley Advance's  August 4th  August 11th , 2011 edition.

If you are interested in participating as a vendor at next year’s festival please contact Stephanie Captein, Agriculture Programs Coordinator, at 604-532-3515 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
