Langley Demonstration Garden Summer Workshops 

Your backyard is an ecosystem! Worms are busy below the lawn creating new soil. Buttercups and clover attract bees and insects to pollinate plants. These insects in turn provide food for birds and wildlife.

Join the Langley Demonstration Garden for ideas on how to promote a sustainable environment and a healthy ecosystem in your garden and home. Come indulge your green thumb and learn from local experts what earth-firendly things you can do for your garden and home.

 

 

Compost 101

Thursday, May 27: 7:00-8:30PM. FREE.

Make black gold in your back yard! Learn how to turn food scraps and yard waste into rich organic fertilizer for flowers, lawns and veggie patches. This workshop is great for beginners and for experienced compost users who want to troubleshoot their compost systems.

Fruit Tree Care

Monday, June 14: 7:00-9:00PM. FREE.

Are fruit trees a mystery to you? Sustainable Horticulture Specialist Kent Mullinix of Kwantlen University will unlock the riddle. Learn how to care for your fruit trees, deal with pests and diseases organically, prune, and promote pollination.

 

Local Food 102

Thursday, June 24: 7:00-9:00PM. FREE.

Heard about the 100 mile diet and want to decrease your foodprint? Join local food and agriculture expert Ione Smith to learn what you can do to make your meals more environmentally friendly. Ione will share inspiring stories from communities in Canada and around the world and explain how to conserve local farmland in our growing region.

 

Organic Cooking

Thursday, July 15: 7:00-9:00PM. $20.

This is the 100 metre diet! Take a tour of the Langley Demonstration Garden, harvest veggies, and enjoy an organic meal directly from garden to plate. Participants will prepare bruschetta, salad, and dessert and take home some great recipes.

 

Rethinking Weeds

Tuesday, July 20: 7:00-9:00PM. $5.

When is a weed not a weed? When it’s a salad, of course! Dandelion greens, purslane, lambsquarters… we’re surrounded by a virtual smorgasbord of tasty weeds. Join David Catzel of Glorious Organics Coopeative to learn about the many uses of wild plants and enjoy a delicious weedy snack.

 

Xeriscaping

Thursday, July 29: 7:00-9:00PM. FREE.

Learn to landscape you yard with native plants that are beautiful and drought tolerant. Xeriscaping is landscaping that reduces the need for watering and takes the strain off our municipal water supply. Master Organic Gardener Kim Greenwood will explain how to choose native plants and where to grow them.

 

Building a Cob Oven

Saturday, July 17 and Sunday, July 18: 10:00-4:00. $40.

Have you caught the natural building craze? Learn how to use environmentally-friendly local  materials to construct an outdoor oven. Facilitated by Nate Cunnings of Cunnings Oven Builders.

 

Home Canning

Have you always wanted to learn how to do your own home canning? Or just interested in building you repertoire of recipes? Join us for one of these hands-on workshops and learn how to safely preserve the tastes of summer. Participants will take home a jar of preserves and a guide to home preserving.

 

Medicinal Plants

Thursday, August 12: 7:00-9:00PM. $10.

Managing your health can seem like a navigating a jungle these days. Explore the amazing healing and protective properties of common plants and learn to make a medicinal vinegar. Facilitated by Barb McClellan, a local herbalist with 18 years experience.
