To re-establish native plant communities on all stream-banks within the Township of Langley's 11 watersheds.
Objectives:
To identify sites where riparian (streamside) vegetation is lacking, and plant these sites with native trees and shrubs.
To educate landowners about responsible land stewardship, by involving them in our projects and by accommodating their needs in our projects.
To educate members of the community about the importance of streams by involving them in volunteer tree planting events. This is also accomplished by working with high-school and university students who seek or require work experience.
To provide guidance and technical support for the volunteer based stewardship community who want to complete their own tree planting projects.
To salvage native plants from sites slated for development; these plants can then be stored for replanting along degraded streams.
To monitor and maintain plants on our project sites to ensure a minimum 90% survival rate.
Since forming in 1993, LEPS has planted over 40,000 potted plants - 3000 salvaged plants on 110 planting sites, and has completed 13,000m of streamside planting.
