What is the National Report?

The National Summary Report is the key document produced by the National Watershed Stewardship Policy Discussion, a project completed in partnership with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO). The project supports Canada's Stewardship Agenda to "strengthen policy and legislative support for stewards by providing the essential economic, policy, and legal tools and instruments required to support stewardship programs and activities."

What is in the Report?

The Report presents policy recommendations and suggested actions to strengthen watershed stewardship programs and activities. The report synthesizes a significant quantity of input generated by a broad cross-section of stewardship communities across Canada.

How were Recommendations Compiled?

The process to collect recommendations involved workshops and on-line discussions with stewardship groups in five regions: Maritimes, Quebec, Ontario, Prairies, and Pacific. Volunteers and professional met in Langley before the Leading Edge Conference: Stewardship and Conservation in Canada to amalgamate the regional results and present recommendations and suggested actions for government and communities. A draft report was then presented at the Leading Edge Conference in Victoria, July 3-6, 2003. Regional reports can be downloaded below.

Who is guiding the process?

The process is being guided by a watershed stewardship steering committee representing watershed stewardship organisations from across Canada. The participating organisations are: Clean Annapolis River Project, Zone d-Intervention Prioritaire Baie des Chaleurs, Conservation Ontario, Alberta Land Stewardship Centre of Canada, and Langley Environmental Partners Society.

Next Steps?

We are currently drafting a communication plan that will be used to present this report to federal departments and provincial ministries.
