Water Wise

One hour, once a week!

Studies have shown that's all the watering it takes to maintain a healthy lawn during the summer. The Township of Langley's Water Wise team is hoping local residents take that message to heart and help protect local groundwater resources. Half of the Township's water supply comes from the ground and those groundwater levels are currently declining due to overuse. Summer months are the hardest time of year for Langley's groundwater aquifers as the demand for water doubles mostly due to lawn sprinkling while rainfall drastically decreases.

The Water Wise program is a joint initiative between the Township and LEPS that was launched in 2002, and targets a different neighbourhood each summer for an educational campaign. Water Wise is an outreach program which provides the public with educational and practical tools they can utilise to help reduce water use. Through this program, the Township holds workshops, offers rain barrels and water conservation kits at a subsidized cost, and provides a toilet rebate program.

Water Wise 2010

The Water Wise Team has officially completed our door-to-door outreach in Walnut Grove! 2010 was our third and final year in the community, reaching a total 2,500 homes. From 2008-2010 Water Wise completed over 4,000 visits, and we are happy to say that roughly 87% of residents that we talked to took the Water Conservation Challenge! Participating households reduced their weekly watering time by an average of 70 minutes, resulting in daily water savings of 190 litres per household, by limiting lawn sprinkling to 1 hour or 1 inch per week! In the last two years, 40% of households took the next step, which was to ‘Go Golden’ by forgoing lawn sprinkling altogether. Way to go Walnut Grove!

Water Wise 2011

The Water Wise team is headed out again in the summer of 2011 with the Water Conservation Challenge! For Water Wise's ninth year in action they will be visiting 1700 homes in Murrayville. Water Wise will be aiming to educate Murrayville residents through door-to-door visits, as well as at local events throughout the summer, on water conservation. Water Wise will be focusing mainly on reducing time spent lawn watering, with the help of offering residents educational and practical tools, as the main form of water conservation this summer.

If you are interested in being a Water Wise Household take the Water Conservation Challenge! Lawn sprinkling uses 1300 litres of water per hour, so cutting back on lawn sprinkling during the dry summer months when water consumption is at its highest will help to make sure there is enough water for everyone.

Water Wise Needs Volunteers!gold star

During the summer of 2010 Water Wise technicians and volunteers traveled door to door in the Walnut Grove area, the campaign focused on the Township's Water Conservation Challenge, reaching over 2500 homes. The Water Wise crew continues to work diligently to encourage residents to join the Water Conservation Challenge by taking a pledge to water their lawns for an hour or less each week.
