The mapping is designed to allow land-use planners and LEPS to identify areas of habitat that are important to preserving the biodiversity of Langley. It is complemented by stream mapping data created by the Mapping and Inventory program. Each habitat type was digitized (drawn) using an aerial photo at a scale of 1:50,000 and a minimum polygon size of 0.01 ha. This means we have a very fine level of detail available. The digitizing was completed on 1995 aerial photos and updated to the 2002 series. It is in digital format in MapInfo and is updatable as new aerials are flown.
The mapping has been ground-truthed for accuracy by several members of the YEAH crew, and the results are being used by both the Ministry of Forests and the Ministry of Sustainable Resource Management as satellite training material for their regional and provincial mapping projects.
